Slide decks (and some videos) for talks I’ve given
If you’d like to use any of my slides, please get in contact! I’m happy to also update my timeseries plots of air temperature, sea ice extent, etc.
Guest Lecture: Mysteries of Antarctic Sea Ice at U Calgary
Guest lecture at the University of Calgary on 6th March 2024. I was visiting U Calgary after some Canadian fieldwork as part of my SCAR fellowship.
CAA at COP29
The Arctic Climate Crisis
Presented as part of an event run by the Clean Arctic Alliance as part of COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan. I work with the CAA at COP every year and they’re a great bunch.
Changing Sea Ice in the North East Passage
Presented at the Cryosphere Science and Policy Workshop in Beijing, September 2024. I prepared the analysis in this presentation specially for this three-day meeting.
A Beginner’s Guide to Arctic Sea Ice Decline
Pulled together *at very short notice” for the Cryosphere Pavilion COP 29 Baku. Hence some chaos with the clicker and the allusion to a rather light in-person audience! Video here.
School Activity: Introduction to Remote Sensing
Presented to final-year school students in February 2025 as part of a morning of hand-on activities learning about remote sensing.
Guest Lecture: In-Situ Radar Remote Sensing
Guest lecture for UiT’s physics undergraduate students as part of their optics, microwave and ultrasound course. I presented this lecture before running a hands-on activity where we played with my K-band raspberry-pi radar.
Guest lecture about snow on sea ice given to the snow and ice processes course at the University centre in Svalbard. I was visiting Eero Rinne as part of my WCRP project on next-gen consumer radar systems.
Guest Lecture: Snow on Sea Ice at UNIS
VIDEO HERE (audio not great)
Given on day one at the Cryosphere Pavilion at COP 28 in Dubai. This talk has been surprisingly popular on YouTube with 4800 views!
COP28 Arctic Amplification Update 2023
Presented at the Chile Pavilion at COP28 Dubai as part of a wider session on Antarctica.
I later used the same slides as a cue for “Thin and Thinner: Antarctic Sea Ice Up Close and Personal” - an in conversation style side event at the Cryosphere Pavilion where I talked about my overwintering experience in Antarctica. Watch here.

UCL Global Geophysics Seminar
Guest lecture at UCL about my 2022 Weddell Sea field campaign aboard RV Polarstern.
Challenges to radar-retrievals of Antarctic sea ice thickness (the in-situ situation). I had some questions at the end from a couple of my heroes.
IGS Global Seminar Series
Joint presentation with Rosemary Willatt to a few members of the European Space Agency’s Mission Advisory Group for the CRISTAL altimeter mission. Rosie and I presented this before joining the MAG ourselves! RW presented slides 2, 3, 4, 18 & 19.
ESA CRISTAL MAG
Provocatively titled talk “Snow on Arctic sea ice: Poorly measured, poorly modelled, poorly understood”. I originally gave this as an invited talk at the British Antarctic Survey, and later presented it at the monthly UCL Physical Geography seminar.
BAS Polar Oceans Seminar
I gave this talk early on in my PhD at the ESA mid-pandemic online conference. I ended up putting this project on ice for a while, but it’s now being nobly pursued by Connor Nelson and Robert Ricker’s SO-SIMBA team.
ESA Polar Earth Observation Conference
I spoke to students at Castle Hill Primary School, who were aged between six and nine. The final slide introduces the activity that we did for the rest of the morning: making a flag for Antarctica based on what they learned in my talk.
